One Conference, Two Titles

Had a question from an obviously proud Cub Twitter Follower yesterday following Monett's class 3 state championship win.

I thought it was such a great question, I decided to look into it.  What I found says a lot about the current state of high school athletics.  If you would rather just know the short answer, skip down to the end.

At first blush, here is the list I found of conferences with 2 state champions in the same year using this list of Missouri high school conferences.

2016 - Big 8: Monett (3), Lamar (2)
2012 – Suburban KC Gold: Blue Springs (6), Lee’s Summit West (5)
2008 – Suburban St. Louis, North Division: Hazelwood Central (6), Hazelwood East (5)
2006 – Suburban KC Gold: Blue Springs South (6), Raymore-Peculiar (5)
2002 - Suburban KC Blue: Kearney (4), Platte County (3)
1994 – Missouri River Valley West: Excelsior Springs (4A), Odessa (3A)
1989 – Metro League: Lutheran North (3A), John Burroughs (2A)
1985 – Metro League: MICDS (3A), John Burroughs (2A)
1984 - Missouri River Valley East: Lexington (3A), Knob Noster (2A)

A relatively short list.  48 years of MSHSAA state football championships have given us just 9 instances of this.  That's good.  But we know that conference affiliations have shifted so I took a look at that and this list got shorter.

The Missouri River Valley Conference has a good website with their team history so it was easy to check out the 2 times they turned this trick.  And wouldn't you know it, both 1984 and 1994 got knocked off the list.  Knob Noster did not join the MRVC until 1992, and Excelsior Springs left the MRVC in 1971 before rejoining in 2007.  So those 2 years come off the list leaving us 7.

The Suburban KC Conference is kind of hard to track as every 2 years they divide their teams into 4 divisions based on size.  But I did find an article breaking down the realignment going into place for the 2011-12 school years that placed Lee's Summit West not in the Gold division, but in the Red division just below it.  Meaning in 2012, Blue Springs and West were in the Suburban KC conference, but not in the same division of the conference.  Say good bye to 2012.

Same story for 2006 as Raymore-Peculiar had not accended to the Gold division with Blue Springs South either.  And 2002 goes away as well as Platte County did not join the Suburban KC until 2008.

That leaves us with this list.

2016 - Big 8: Monett (3), Lamar (2)
2008 – Suburban St. Louis, North Division: Hazelwood Central (6), Hazelwood East (5)
1989 – Metro League: Lutheran North (3A), John Burroughs (2A)
1985 – Metro League: MICDS (3A), John Burroughs (2A)

Now it's getting even more impressive.  Only one small change to make to this one.  The Metro League in St. Louis was founded in the 2011-2012 school year.  But the majority of the teams in the Metro League came from the old ABC League that had been in place for over 80 years.  That includes John Burroughs, Lutheran North, and MICDS.  1985 and 1989 are legit.  So is 2008 as Hazelwood Central and East have been competing together for a long time.

The flip side of this is that with all the conference shifting it may have happened  with 2 teams that have moved away from each other conference wise.  It's possible, but after looking at all the history, I only see 1 or possibly 2 possibilities.  In any case, it's a rare event.

That's the long answer.  The short answer is 4 times, that we can be sure of.

2016 - Big 8: Monett (3), Lamar (2)
2008 – Suburban St. Louis, North Division: Hazelwood Central (6), Hazelwood East (5)
1989 – ABC League: Lutheran North (3A), John Burroughs (2A)
1985 – ABC League: MICDS (3A), John Burroughs (2A)

There you have it @MonettSportsMed.  Thanks for the question.
