  • 1842 - In the USA, Chris Lilly and Tom McCoy bare-fist fight for 119 rounds, when McCoy falls dead in the ring, after 2 hours 43 minutes. During the fight he had received 100 square blows, and was knocked down 81 times.
  • 1849 - First US prize fight fatality (Tom McCoy).
  • 1866 7th British Golf Open: Willie Park, Sr. shoots a 169 at Prestwick Golf Club
  • 1872 12th British Golf Open: Tom Morris, Jr. shoots a 166 at Prestwick Golf Club
  • 1883 - Cleveland Blues' pitcher Hugh Daily no-hits Philadelphia Phillies 1-0.

   


 

  • 1907 Canadian Interprovincial Rugby Football union (Big Four) forms with Hamilton Tigers, Toronto Argonauts, Ottawa Rough Riders & Montreal Foot Ball

  • 1974 - Philadelphia Phillies set National League record, using 27 players in a game, Saint Louis Cardinals uses 24, tying record of 51. Philadelphia Phillies win 7-3 in 17.

  • 1996 - Charlie O'Brien (Toronto Blue Jays) became the first catcher in major league baseball history to wear a hockey goalie-like catcher's mask. The game was against the New York Yankees. 
  • 1996 - John Wetteland (New York Yankees) became on the second Yankee to record 40 or more saves in a season. 
  • 1997 Carolina Hurricane's 1st exhibition game beat NY Islanders 4-1
  • 1998 US Open Men's Tennis: In an all-Australian final Patrick Rafter retains title; beats Mark Philippoussis 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0
  • 1999 John Elway's #7 jersey is retired by the Denver Broncos


    


  • 2001 - Due the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Major League Baseball postpones all games through September 17.
  • 2002 - Mike Vernon retired after a 19-year career as a player in the NHL. 
  • 2003 - In Oakland, CA, Frank Francisco (Texas Rangers), a relief pitcher, threw a chair into the right field box seats. Two spectators were hit in the head. The game was delayed for 19 minutes. The Athletics won the game 7-6 in the 10th inning. 
  • 2009 US Open Women's Tennis: Kim Clijsters wins her second US title; beats Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 7-5, 6-3
  • 2010 - Rafael Nadal wins the U.S. Open tennis championship, defeating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
  • 2013 Jim Furyk fires 12-under-par 59 in the 2nd round of the BMW Championship at Conway Farms GC in Lake Forest, Illinois, becoming just the 6th player to shoot sub-60 in a PGA Tour event
  • 2015 Evian Championship, Evian Resort: Lydia Ko of New Zealand wins by 6 from Lexi Thompson to become youngest major winner, 18yrs, 142 days
  • 2015 US Open Men's Tennis: Novak Đoković wins his second US title; beats Roger Federer 6–4, 5–7, 6–4, 6–4
