Some High Scoring Games Tonite

During the Bolivar tournament I was involved in a discussion about the lack of scoring this year in highschool basketball games. While sitting with a coach, referee, retired coach and a very recent highschool player, all of which shall remain nameless. We were discusing the possible reasons for the lack of scoring. Case in point, the last two nights of the Blue and Gold, especially that Championship Game between Branson and Nixa (39-38 Branson). Seems silly to bring this up on a night when on the Boys side Glendale, Branson and Aurora all put up numbers in the 80's and on the girls side Lebanon was able to hold Nixa to only 91. But I digress, as I was saying before I so rudely interupted myself, how come players today have so much trouble putting the biscuit in the basket? Coaches view: (I am taking a few liberties) The referees have allowed the game to become so physical in an attempt to be like the big boys, that the average highschool athlete is not able to produce. Also, because they have allowed it to become more physical, the consistency has been somewhat lacking. It may be a foul in the 1st quarter and then not in the 4th, and that frustrates players and coaches alike, not to mention fans, (some of which have become nutty). How many times have you seen obvious contact on a shot under the basket and no call and then 80 feet from the basket a minor bump or hand check is called. The Player: Everyone is so much better now both physically and talent wise that defense always improves in basketball when the athletisism improves. There is not as much room on the floor, they are bigger and faster than they ever have been. The retired coach: No fundamentals, everyone wants to be flashy, more concerened with how they look than how they play. They do not work on shooting correctly, setting a good screen and getting someone an open look. Their picking up bad habits during the summer playing to many games in an undisciplined envirement. The referee: The games are shorter, not many fast breaks, not as many whistles, not as many foul shots and an 8 minute quarter goes by faster now because the clock is not stopping.

Well that was interesting to me to see the different theories for lack of offensive production. Maybe it just seems that way, with football teams now routinely scoring in the 40's and 50's maybe we just think the scoring in basketball has gone down. I do not know, or maybe its just everybody who plays Nixa and Mt. Vernon. Well whatever it is, if it is a problem someone will fix it. Maybe after President Obama corrects the BCS, he will help us out.

Class 5 Area Rankings

1. Branson (14-1) One loss early in the year to Kickapoo and a Blue and Gold Championship. Looking at the one seed in the District but a lot of games to play.

2. Glendale (12-4) With a good Showing in the T of C and a win wver Hillcrest going in they make a big jump to #2.

3. Central (14-2) Also a good showing in the T of C and continue to roll through a brutal schedule both with the times of Games as well as opposition.

4. Hillcrest (9-3) Early in the season they benefited from not havein to play, but now they drop in the poll. Last time out they lose to Glendale and still have some touph games remaining.

5. Ozark and Nixa I do not know who t leave off of this list. Ozark has lost 4 in a row, but the Eagles are suffering through injuries. We will see tonite as Kickapoo comes to the Eagles Nest.

Girls

1. Nixa (14-2) Still rolling, and will remain attop this list until they are defeated and maybe stay even then.

2. Kickapoo (11-3) With that dismantling of the Lady Zizzers last night, the Lady Chiefs are still a team you ko not want to play.

3. Ozark (13-3) With a win over the Lady Eagles Ozark is still a formidable foe.

4. Central (9-6) Not as many wins as the others, but a brutal schedule. A win last night over Glendale is a chance to right the ship going into the stretch run before Districts.

5. Lebanon (12-4)

Last night may have been our last Show on the Jock.

We have had a great time sharing scores with you on the Jock 98.7 over the past one year, however due to some things that have been out of our control we can no longer continue. We have contacted numerous business ie: Coke, Prime, The Courts, Hiland Dairy, restauraunts, sporting goods, barber shops, and hospitals. With the economics being as they are, even the station was not able to come through on advertisers they guaranteed. Unless 6 businesses come through next week we cannot afford to continue. We appreciate all the Coaches and administrators do deligence in making sure thier schools got information to us and then to you. We will continue to update this web site with information that is provided but the show was a big part of getting out the message.

Thank you,

Guy Newcomb

New Area Rankings (good luck)

Class 4 and 5 Boys

1. Hillcrest
Benefiting from not playing in the Blue and Gold Coach Shafers group will hang on to the #1 seed. As Central, Nixa, Branson and Ozark beat up on one another. Hillcrest still has not been beaton by any local teams and with a win over Nixa in the Republic Tourney they still have the #1 seed. How long will that last?

2. Ozark
A Blue and Gold chaampionship and a win over Kickapoo. What else can you say. We'll see.

3. Branson
Also a Blue and Gold Championsip in one of the ugliest games played in that tourney championship history, none the less a win. Branson has what may be the best 1, 2 punch in that District with Unruh and Wiebe. We will see come District time.

4. Nixa
The deepest team in the area, that maybe a pitfall for Coach Jay Osborne with so many kids that can play. Nixa is quite capable of shutting down most teams in the area and with just 2 looses on the young season I look for good things. No secret I am a big fan of the Eagles.

5. Kickapoo
Still have not lost an Ozark Conference game in 9 years. And with Alex Hall healthy they may need to be the #1 on this list. We will see as 4 of these teams are in the same District.

Class 4 and 5 Girls

1. Nixa
Middleton probably has more talent on this team than the last team he coached. NCAA II SBU. The lady Eagles are loaded. So much for the U of POO. That game was closest at the tip. They will not lose to Ozark, Kickapoo or anyone else for that matter until the final four. And maybe not then.

2. Kickapoo
Still a very formadable foe, well coached and steeped in traditon the Lady Chiefs are still the class of the area mostly because of Coach Phillips.

3. Ozark
With a win over Nixa they are still a team that could jump up and bite someone.

4. Glendale
With a win over Ozark and a final showing in the Pink and White Glendale is deserving of this list.

5. Webb City
Young, but a win over Neosho.

Class 1-3 Boys

1. Mt. Vernon
Finals of Blue and Gold and wins over Lebanon, Buffalo and Spokane, they deserve it.

2. Clever
Fun to watch, well coached and Jeremy Dressler is a difference maker.

3. Chadwick
One of the most fun teams to watch, we will see them on the 9th v Everton.

4. Spokane
Loaded, and well coached. Performed well in the Blue and Gold.

5. Blue Eye
Winning the Walnut Grove tourney going away they are the real deal.

Class 1-3 Girls

1. Fair Grove
NO DOUBT!!

2. Mt. Vernon
Yeah I am still a homer but a 11 seed in the Pink and White and finished 4th.

3. Skyline
Defending State champs and I look for nothing short of that. Fair Grove may have something to say about that.

4. Blue Eye
With a win over Branson they have to be on this list.

5. Pleasant Hope
With a visit to the championship game of the Lebanon tourney the Lady Pirates are deverving of this ranking.
