  • 1661 Yachting begins in England; King Charles II beats his brother James, Duke of York racing from Greenwich to Gravesend
  • 1879 Cincinnati Enquirer publishes 1st report on baseball reserve clause
  • 1889 Dutch soccer club HFC Haarlem is founded; National champions 1946; bankrupt in 2010; merge with HFC Kennemerland, new club Haarlem Kennemerland
  • 1903 - First baseball World Series, Pittsburgh Pirates versus Boston Pilgrims.
  • 1908 - Jack Chesbro's final New York Yankees' victory, beats Walter Johnson 2-1.
  • 1910 Regina Rugby Club (to become CFL Saskatchewan Roughriders) plays first game, losing to Moose Jaw Tigers, 16-6
  • 1919 - World Series #16 begins as a best of 9 affair, Chicago White Sox intentionally throw this series to satisfy gamblers (The Black Sox Scandal).


   


 

  • 1921 - First all New York series to be played entirely in one stadium (the Polo Grounds) and first New York Yankees World Series begins (World Series #18).
  • 1922 - Former Chicago Staleys play first NFL game as Chicago Bears, win 6-0.
  • 1922 Cardinals 2nd baseman Rogers Hornsby hits 3-for-5 in 7-1 regular season ending win v Cubs; improves batting average to .401; only MLB player to bat .400 and hit 40 HRs in same season
  • 1924 Finnish distance runner Paavo Nurmi runs world record 4 mile (19:15.4) & 5 mile (24:06.2)at Vilpuri, Russia
  • 1924 MLB Commissioner Kenesaw Landis bans NY Giants outfielder Jimmy O'Connell & coach Cozy Dolan from World Series after they attempt to bribe Phillies shortstop Heinie Sand
  • 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates with a team including 5 future Baseball Hall of Famers clinch NL pennant with 9-6 win v Cincinnati Reds; Pirates' last NL pennant until 1960
  • 1928 Finnish distance runner Paavo Nurmi runs 15k world record 46:49.6 and 10 miles 50:15.0 in Berlin, Germany


                 

            

  • 1931 Philadelphia Athletics seek 3rd straight World Series baseball title; beat St. Louis Cardinals, 6-2 in opener at Sportsman's Park; lose series, 4-3
  • 1932 - Babe Ruth's points and hits a home run there, off of Chicago Cubs' Charlie Root.
  • 1932 - NHL re-admits Ottawa and drops Pittsburgh.
  • 1933 - Green Bay Packers make five first downs, the New York Giants make 0, but still win 10-7.
  • 1933 - Washington Senators' coach Nick Altrock plays in a game at age 57.
  • 1933 Babe Ruth makes his final pitching appearance in MLB; pitches all 9 innings in a season ending 6-5 win v Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium; hits his 34th home run of the season in 5th inning
  • 1944 - Saint Louis Browns win their only American League pennant.
  • 1945 World heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis is discharged from US army after being awarded the Legion of Merit
  • 1946 - First National League playoffs, Brooklyn Dodgers versus Saint Louis Cardinals (Saint Louis wins two games to 0).
  • 1946 - Bob Feller is 348th strikeout of the season.

  • 1950 - Philadelphia Phillies win National League pennant on last day of season (10th inning home run).
  • 1950 US Open Women's Golf, Rolling Hills CC: Babe Zaharias ties Open scoring record, -9 291 to beat amateur Betsy Rawls by 9 strokes
  • 1955 Baltimore Colts fullback Alan Ameche becomes the first rookie in NFL history to top 100 yards rushing in his first 2 games; totals 153 against Detroit Lions after 194 yards in debut v Chicago Bears
  • 1956 - Johnny Heckmann rides seven winners at Chicago Hawthorne Horse track.
  • 1959 - First World Series (World Series #56) since 1948 not to feature a New York team (Los Angeles Dodgers versus Chicago White Sox).
  • 1960 14th NHL All-Star Game, Montreal Forum: All-Stars beat Montreal Canadiens, 2-1

  • 1970 - The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Montreal Expos in final game to be played at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia, 2-1. After the game, fans swarm onto the field and destroy it.
  • 1972 - First games of the World Hockey Association.
  • 1972 NYC Men's Marathon is won by Sheldon Karlin in 2:27:52; Nina Kuscsik wins Women's race in 3:08:41
  • 1973 - Leo Durocher resigns as Houston Astros' manager.
  • 1975 "The Thrilla in Manila"; Muhammad Ali stops Joe Frazier in 14 in Quezon City, the Philippines to retain his WBC/WBA heavyweight title
  • 1977 - Brazilian soccer great Pele retires with 1,281 goals in 1,363 games.

  • 1994 NHL owners begin lockout of players lasting 103 days; season shortened to 48 games instead of 84; players seek collective bargaining and owners a salary cap
  • 1994 Australian cricket batsman David Boon scores 114 during 1 wicket, 1st Test defeat v Pakistan in Karachi; his 19th Test century
  • 1995 Mike Mussina tosses Baltimore Oriole's 5th consecutive MLB shutout in season ending, 4-0 victory over Detroit Tigers
  • 1997 Carolina Hurricanes lose franchise's debut NHL game, 4-2 v Tampa Bay Lightning at the Ice Palace, Tampa, Florida
  • 2000 Juan Antonio Samaranch, the chairman of the IOC declares the XXVII Olympics in Sydney the "best Olympic Games ever" at the closing ceremony
  • 2000 United States wins the most medals (97), and the most gold medals (40) in Summer Olympics held in Sydney, Australia
  • 2004 - Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners breaks the major league record for hits in a single season, with hit number 258.
  • 2006 - Brisbane Broncos beat Melbourne Storm in the controversial 2006 National Rugby League Grand Final at Telstra Stadium in Sydney, Australia.
  • 2006 - Albert Haynesworth (Tennessee Titans) kicked off the helmet of Andre Gurode (Dallas Cowboys) and then scraped his cleat across his head. Gurode required 30 stitches and suffered blurry vision from the attack. The NFL suspended Haynesworth for 5 games without pay.
