  • 1897 3rd US Golf Open: Joe Lloyd shoots a 162 at Chicago GC in Wheaton Ill
  • 1906 Playing as "Sullivan" Columbia University jr Eddie Collins debuts with A's
  • 1912 Center fielder Casey Stengel breaks in with Brooklyn & hits 4 singles
  • 1917 Honus Wagner, retires at 43, Pirates retire his #33
  • 1920 - The American Professional Football Association was formed in Canton, OH. It was the precursor to the National Football League (NFL). 
  • 1922 Cyclist Piet Moeskops becomes world sprint champ

  • 1956 - New York Yankees clinch pennant #22 on Mickey Mantle's 50th homer of the year.
  • 1959 59th US Golf Amateur Championship won by Jack Nicklaus
  • 1960 80th U.S. Men's National Championship: Neale Fraser beats Rod Laver (6-4, 6-4, 9-7)
  • 1960 74th U.S. Women's National Championship: Darlene Hard beats Maria Bueno (6-4, 10-12, 6-4)
  • 1961 - The Minnesota Vikings were debuted as the new National Football League (NFL) team. 
  • 1961 Fran Tarkenton plays his first NFL Game against the Chicago Bears, coming off the bench to lead the Vikings to a 37-13 victory, also becoming the only QB to throw four touchdown passes in his first career game

  • 1984 - New York Mets' Dwight Goodin becomes second to strikeout 32 over two consecutive games.
  • 1986 - Marina Stepanova of USSR sets the 400m hurdle woman's record (52.94).
  • 1988 - Jeff Reardon becomes first to record 40 or more saves in both American League and National League.
